Meditation & Chanting

original-lotus-groupMeditation is an essential practice for developing presence and equanimity, enabling us to be present and skillful in each moment of our lives. Meditation classes at River Yoga are taught in a simple, practical style which allows students who are new to meditation to begin practicing in their first class. At the same time, useful instruction for those with an established meditation practice is also offered.

We have three meditation classes every week:

Monday evenings – 6:30 – 7:45 (Use your class card or drop-in for $9)

Friday mornings – 8:15 – 9:00am ($5 drop-in)

Friday evenings – 5:30 – 6:45 (Use your class card or drop-in for $9)

Drop-ins are welcome at all classes. No prior experience necessary!

Mantra is a valuable practice for attuning the body/heart/mind. Mantra literally means “that which carries us across the mind.” Sometimes the administrative part of our mind is all we can see and feel. Chanting a mantra or an ancient text comprised of several mantras, tunes us into our deeper wisdom, opening us to the place inside us which is always skillful and aware. Mantras also tune us into the devotion, gratitude and love which are inherent to each of us. Or, as our founder, Parvathi, often says, “we chant to become enchanted!”

At River Yoga, we chant in the ancient, vibrational language of Sanskrit. You don’t need any prior experience to participate. We chant in a call and response style: the teacher chants and then the class repeats the chant together. There is no need to be concerned about the sound of your voice–chanting is not singing. And the pronunciation will develop over time–the important thing is to set your intention to open your heart/mind as you practice. If you wish, you are always welcome to participate through listening–soaking in the vibrations is a beautiful experience!
